Lyrics

Verse 1

A flower grows above the leaves
Cast its sent upon the breeze
She lays her grain on fertile ground
To fill the earth with beauty

Verse 2

As a mother gives her family life
Her pedals wilt from sacrifice
So the children live and carry on
To fill the earth with beauty

Chorus

Please don’t take my children away
Let them stay and let them play
Let them grow within my site
To teach them how to seek the light

Bridge 1

All us kids seemed to know how to fight
But momma always put things right
With patience and love she gave herself
Till there was nothing left to give.

Bridge 2

Grown and gone our own kids we’ve sown
Still she loved them all as if her own
Though old and tired she gave herself
Till there was nothing left to give.
nothing left to give.

Chorus

Please don’t take my children away
Let them stay and let them play
Let them grow within my site
To teach them how to seek the light

Verse 1

A flower grows above the leaves
Cast its sent upon the breeze
She lays her grain on fertile ground
To fill the earth with beauty

Verse 2

As a mother gives her family life
Her pedals wilt from sacrifice
So the children live and carry on
To fill the earth with beauty

Synopsis

The is what you might call a sandwich song. The structure is symmetrical regardless if you look at it forward or backward. The song starts with verse 1 and 2 and then the chorus harmony part followed by the 2 verse bridge in the middle. Then the chorus harmony again and ending with verse 1 & 2.  A sandwich song.

The motivation for the song

The song was inspired by a visit to my mothers home. My mother was getting up in age. She had raised 7 of us kids including myself and trust me, this was no easy task, I was there. She also had a major hand in raising her grand children and now her great grand children. With this visit it was my intention to find a way to give my mother some peace and lighten the burden all these children were to my mother. After I explained what I intended to do, I was shocked to hear my mother plead with me, “Please don’t take away my babies”. It broke my heart as she explained to me what the meaning of life was for her. A few years later my mother died with her children, grand children and great grand children by her side. Only now do I understand that my mothers passion for life was to see her children grow. All her babies are a tribute to her determination, tenacity and love she had for us. We are her bed of beautiful flowers which she tended so carefully and gave everything she had to make it the most beautiful flower bed possible.   ~I really hope you enjoy this song.

  2. Great music David! Inspirational. Makes me want to practice on my banjo. Music and writing is awesome. Again, great work!

  3. David, I just listened to “Flower” and I love it. It was a pleasure to meet you in that Subway alongside I-5 in Redding, California. We were both wearing guitar-themed t-shirts. Serendipity.
